Sickness Cost Calculator

Put a real figure on staff sickness: sick pay, employer on-costs, cover and lost productivity, for shops in the UK and Ireland.

One Absence, Five Costs

A sick day costs more than the sick pay

Sick pay
Statutory or your own policy
Employer on-costs
NI or PRSI and pension
Covering the shift
Overtime or agency uplift
Lost productivity
Uncovered days still cost you orders
Management time
Rearranging the rota and delivery run
The calculator adds all five, then shows the cost per absence, per day, and projected over a year.

How it works

  1. 1Pick your country. UK uses Statutory Sick Pay rules; Ireland uses statutory sick leave. Company sick pay can be layered on top.
  2. 2Enter the wage, hours and days off for the absence, and how much of it you covered with overtime or agency staff.
  3. 3Review the total cost of the absence, the cost per day, and the projected annual cost from your typical absences per year.

Key controls & outputs

Inputs. Country, wage, hours, days off, sick pay policy, cover choice, on-cost rate and absences per year.
Outputs. Cost per absence and per day, cost as a percentage of annual wage, and projected annual cost.

Why Put A Number On It?

Better decisions come from real figures

Hiring decisions

If absences cost you thousands a year, an extra part-time hire may pay for itself.

Realistic overheads

Feed the annual figure into your operating costs so your prices carry it.

Peak cover plans

Compare overtime against agency cover before Valentine's and Mother's Day, not during them.

Frequently Asked Questions

The UK and Ireland. UK figures use Statutory Sick Pay rules and Ireland uses statutory sick leave (5 days at 70% of pay, capped per day). You can override the defaults with your own sick pay policy.
Sick pay, employer on-costs, the cost of covering the shift (overtime or agency), lost productivity on uncovered days, and management time spent rearranging the rota.
Yes. Enter your typical number of absences per year and the calculator projects the annual cost alongside the cost of a single absence.
Statutory rates come from gov.uk and gov.ie. Indirect cost defaults are planning estimates informed by CIPD and ONS absence research, and every figure can be overridden.
